A LONE MAN is based on a true story of a boy who rose from nearly hopeless conditions to become a multimillionaire. Orphaned in an Indian attack in the 1850's, Fred survived years in the arid desert of New Mexico, with only his dog for company. His life was one of hardship laced with adventure. His intrepid spirit survived near drowning, hungry days in a flooded cave, captured by Indians and being swindled by drifters. He was by turns a horse doctor, a prospector, a homesteader and a wealthy landowner. The author met Fred when Fred was in his 90's.
