Wild Horses & High Mountains

Wild Horses & High Mountains is a collection of eight Old West short stories by author Herb Marlow. "Beaver" is the story of a young trapper who almost marries a pretty girl in Oregon - and then he wins a fight and decides to ride away. In 'Nowhere to Turn" a small marshal proved that he is big enough to run his tough town, with the help of some techniques learned from a Japanese friend. "Turkey Shoot" treats the reader to a glimpse of life in a frontier town before civilization, and shows how justice was served in those days. "Big City" takes place on a train to Kansas City. Rex Smart foils a train robbery and gets a free ticket back home. In "High Mountains" a fur trapper fools the Indians that capture him, and stays on to trap his furs. There's nothing like a wild horse hunt to create excitement, though Rusty Howell in "Wild Horses" may have stumbled onto more excitement than he wants. The old man in "Old Man Comes" goes his own way, but when the bank robbers make off with his mule, the old man takes his complaint to the outlaws - and they regret it. The old saying "You can't go home again." applies to Smoke Hall when he tries to go back to his hometown in Iowa after a life spent as a trapper in the wild Shining Mountains in "Homecoming." He finds out in a hurry that he doesn't want any thing to do with the "Tame" Iowa country. The mountains call him back, and he answers the call.
