Swan Robinson is the best-selling author of many romantic fiction novels but is exhausted with his repetitive writing. He feels like a machine making widgets turning out mediocre books for profit. For his next project he pens a dark, disturbing tale. His editor and best friend, who stands to lose a small fortune should his next book fail, suggests he see a therapist. Swan reluctantly agrees but finds the process surprisingly liberating. By refusing to write another typical romance book he creates a dilemma that forces him to realize his life (and success) are not only about him. His actions have a significant impact on many people. As Swan finds new freedom he creates problems for his soon-to-be ex-wife, his daughter, his lawyer, and his publisher. As the multi-million dollar Swan Robinson empire is in jeopardy each person tries to manipulate him for their own purposes.
