Domestic Manners of the Americans

TROLLOPE Frances (1780-1863) a woman of indefatigable energy, who made an unfortunate marriage, conducted several ventures into, for instance, farming, and when she was past 50 wrote the first of over forty books, by which she proceeded to support her large family. After the failure of their farm at Harrow, she took her three youngest children to America to assist in the founding of the city of New Harmony, Memphis. This venture failing, she travelled for fifteen months in America and in 1832, back in England, published "Domestic Manners of the Americans". "Paris and the Parisians" appeared with great success in 1835, "Vienna and the Austrians" in 1838, and in 1842 "A Visit to Italy". By working both early and late every day, she was writing a long sequence of popular novels, and by the early 1840s was earning a considerable income. Shortly before her death she was astonished to receive Anthony´s first novel.
