What if our parents were mistaken when they said we shouldn't be afraid of the dark?Norman Hooke, a troubled physicist, finds out just how wrong parents can be when, during the course of his normal research, he inadvertently develops a lens that allows him to view a strange new universe existing parallel to our own. Studying this dark world's inhabitants leads him to remarkable insights into the cause of human disease -- a topic dear to Norman, whose son is dying of cancer. At first, Norman is passionately optimistic, but he soon becomes demoralized. Any practical use for his new lens eludes him. With his son's condition worsening, Norman frantically strains to find a solution that he is convinced is somehow locked within the power of the lens. But while Norman has been busy gazing through the lens at the shadow universe, the creatures of darkness beyond it have been gazing back. Though they have always been hidden from humanity, they have forever been aware of man's presence. And enjoyed their own invisibility. That is a status quo they will preserve, at any cost.
