Writings for the Companion to the British Almanac 1831 - 1857
Augustus De Morgan
This volume collects, for the first time, in photographic reproduction, all of De Morgan's essays for the Companion to the (British) Almanac, with superimposed volume pagination and a chronological table of contents. De Morgan had an amazing depth of knowledge in the history of science, mathematics and general antiquarian lore. Subjects covered include bibliography, the history of mathematics and astronomy, chronology, the Newton-Leibnitz controversy, actuarial calculations, computation and more. De Morgan was Professor of Mathematics at University College in London, an author, bibliographer, sometime secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society, first president of the London Mathematical Society, contributor to the publications of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, author of nearly one-sixth of the Penny Cyclopaedia (27 volumes, 1833-1843, supplements to 1858), consulting actuary, formulator of De Morgan's Laws, campaigner for a decimal coinage, antiquarian, and a prolific book reviewer.
