"Ladies of the Canyon can be seen as Joni Mitchell's coming out party. The Canadian icon, who had recently moved to Lookout Mountain in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon (her house is depicted in a watercolour she painted for the album cover), drew inspiration from her surroundings, feeling the pulse of national events, the business world, celebrity and her relationship with Graham Nash. The 1970 album shows the singer-songwriter becoming a pioneer, breaking free from the constructs of folk music and immersing herself in pop, jazz, soul and poetry; profound and perceptive.
