Conflict tells the story of Martha and her family, friends, fun and flirtatious ways. Through all her efforts to enjoy life to the fullest, she has to deal with agonizing situations: the sudden death of her fiancé and her guilty feelings concerning their relationship, the death of her husband in a car accident by a hit-and-run driver, and her second husband's painful confession as he lay in the hospital because of an accident. Can she forgive him? Through the story we see Martha handling a mysterious anonymous telephone caller, who hangs up whenever she answers. Her father wonders if the caller is a rejected suitor. Sarah, only one year younger than Martha, has the same green eyes, dark hair, same high cheekbones, but dimples in place of the mole on Martha's face. While they look alike, they have different personalities. Sarah is more shy, demure and conservative than Martha. Both sisters realize they are like twins, feeling each other's pain, and many times Sarah, though younger, gives good advice to Martha, comforts her when she gets into trouble, and always excuses her sister's obsession with flirting. Sarah admits if boys ogled her like they do Martha she'd tell them to buzz off.
