A teenage boy leaves Philadelphia on horseback heading to Denver City just after the Civil War. Anxious to be his own man, he naively navigates through the plains like the greenhorn he is. Once he arrives in Council Grove, Kansas, his plans are drastically changed as his life. With the help of three new friends, he improves his survival skills, learns a new profession while gradually becoming a cowboy in Texas.
