It has been forty years since the storm that ended the current age of man and sent the world hurtling toward a new ice age at an alarming rate. Winters are now long and harsh while summers are almost non-existent. To the north, a foreboding line of dark clouds stretching from one horizon to the next is slowly but inexorably approaching. It is the last great winter. Once it arrives, it will last for thousands of years. Nothing in the north will survive it. A few survivors still live in these increasingly harsh conditions, among them a dangerous new sub-species of feral humans that prowl the ruined cities, a proud Indian tribe that will move no more, a few violent scavengers, and one recently orphaned young girl named Mira who is remarkably adept at survival. With an old, tattered map from her father and a wolf by her side, Mira is determined to reach the rumored sanctuary of Nova Springs far to the south. But Mira soon discovers that a hellish weather anomaly stands in her way - a vast stretch of ice, snow, and deadly windstorms known simply as "the white." It is a death zone, thought to be impossible to cross and so unforgiving that only one person has survived an encounter with it - a brooding, scarred and jaded legend of a man known to some as the bear and to others as Erik. Mira realizes she has but one chance to escape certain death in the rapidly approaching great winter - convince the gruff and cantankerous Erik to guide her through the dangers of the white. If they can survive long enough to reach the other side, she may just discover that their meeting was no accident and that she unknowingly holds the key to Erik's remarkable legacy, a legacy that began forty years ago with a storm and a promise.
