The author introduces readers to Tony Kovacs, a part-time photojournalist, who was assigned to take pictures at a social event. Photographs can impact a person taking a photo, or a person who is the subject of a photograph. The elements of picture composition, light, exposure of film, development of negatives, enlargement of an image, and the time that a photographer must wait, occupies adventures, dangers and lives of people involved in the story. Inadvertent destruction of some images, that characters seek to have preserved, but may be discounted as frauds, denied in the light, or focused as intensely as a laser beam through a lens.
