Chance is wounded during a mission on the distant planet, Eshiron. Taken in by a primitive tribe, he is nursed to health by a young healer, Katalariana. She feels Chance has come at a critical time to help her tribe, but there are many who fear he is an evil that needs to be destroyed. The two form a bond, but her position as the leader's daughter, and the fact that she's promised to another, means their relationship is forbidden. Chance must decide where his loyalties lie and whether he'll be the savior they hope for, or the destroyer they fear.
