Although access to university has been widened in the form of Foundation programmes to cater for disadvantaged students, this does not necessarily translate to successful completion of their degrees. In addition to their academic under-preparedness, there are ongoing socioeconomic factors which hamper academic progress for these students. This book provides insight into some of these factors; how they may impact on academic achievement during their Foundation year and throughout their tertiary studies. This information is useful for any university programme that offers Foundation programmes or caters for disadvantaged students, as it recommends ways of identifying the ?at risk? factors to help monitor students' performance. The book further advocates for ways to promote the protective factors in order to improve their success rates.
