Focusing on the real-life strategy of football, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 now asks players to be more tactical with their use of the ball and make quick-witted reactions on the pitch. New zonal defending means opponents will intuitively cover open spaces and make players work for an opening. Referees have also been given an overhaul, now making more balanced decisions during matches. Visually, the game has been given a healthy upgrade, with player likenesses that are now more precise and lighting that alters the conditions of each pitch.

Hoping to recreate the atmosphere of match day, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 adds more variation to crowd reactions, with new chants and cheers during a game. Subtle differences between home and away matches will also be apparent, with crowd reactions dependant on their club allegiances. Each player now has their own personal characteristics, with their abilities reflected in the actions of their teammates.
